An Approach to Explain the Long Cooling Times of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars and Soft Gamma Repeaters with the Neutrino Magnetic Moment

چکیده
We present a simple approach to understand the effect of neutrino magnetic moment on neutron star cooling. We find that a neutrino magnetic moment less than (0.2×10−12−8.5×10−10)μB is enough to explain the longer cooling times of anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma repeaters compared to ordinary neutron stars.

Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars: Magnetar Candidates
Baade & Zwicky (1934) were the first to envision the formation of neutron stars as the end product of a supernova explosion. Their forward thinking was not vindicated for another three decades, with the discovery of the first radio pulsars by Bell and Hewish (Hewish et al. 1968). What Baade and Zwicky could not have anticipated, however, was the menagerie of astrophysical objects that are now a...

Recent measurements of the spin-down rates of soft gamma ray repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) have been interpreted as evidence that these objects are “magnetars”: neutron stars spinning down by magnetic dipole radiation, but with a magnetic field two orders of magnitude larger than that of ordinary neutron stars. We discuss the evidence disfavouring this interpretation. We a...

I review of the observational properties of Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs), two unusual manifestations of neutron stars. I summarize the reasoning for SGRs being “magnetars,” neutron stars powered by the decay of a very large magnetic field, and the now compelling evidence that SGRs and AXPs are in fact members of the same source class, as predicted uniquely by t...

I summarize recent developments in the magnetar model of the Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars, give a critical inventory of alternative models for the AXPs, and outline the improved diagnostics expected from present observational efforts.

We show that young pulsars with normal magnetic fields, which are born as fast rotating neutron stars (NSs) in Type II/Ib supernova explosions, can slow down quickly by relativistic particles emission along their magnetic axis. When they slow down sufficiently, they can undergo phase transitions and collapse to strange stars, quark stars or black holes in explosions that remove a substantial fr...
